phpMyAdmin 2.8.0-rc1 - February 20th, 2006 ===========================================
A set of PHP-scripts to administrate MySQL over the Web. --------------------------------------------------------
Announcement ------------
The phpMyAdmin Project is proud to announce the immediate availability of the first release candidate for phpMyAdmin 2.8.0.
phpMyAdmin is a web administration tool for MySQL databases, intended to handle a whole database server as well as a single database. Over the years, it has become the most popular Web GUI for MySQL and is downloaded between 6,000 and 14,000 times a day, according to SourceForge.net.
The jump from 2.7.0 to 2.8.0 is partly because from now on, versions with the same X.Y number will have the same feature set, while the third number will be for bug fixes. Also, 2.8.0 has a new web-based setup script.
Highlights ----------
Improvements:
* PHP 5.1.2 compatibility * Possibility to hide databases * Configurable memory limit for import/export * Better support for CGI * Web-based setup * ... and more than 55 bugs fixed
Detailed list of changes is available under http://www.phpmyadmin.net/ChangeLog.txt
Availability ------------ This software is available under the GNU General Public License V2.0.
You can get the newest version at http://www.phpmyadmin.net/ Available file formats are: .zip, .tar.gz and .tar.bz2.

phpMyAdmin handles the administration of MySQL over the Web. It can manage a whole MySQL server as well as a single database. Currently it can: - create, copy, rename and drop databases
it cannot alter Databases? like changing default collation, comment and .. oh it cannot changing default table engine ... we should change this ...
- create, copy, drop, rename and alter tables - do table maintenance - delete, edit and add fields
why sometimes drop and sometimes delete?
- execute any SQL-statement, even batch-queries
should we say multiple sql queries?
- manage keys on fields
create, drop, alter indexes
- load text files into tables - create and read dumps of tables
or whole databases and even servers
- export data to CSV, XML and Latex formats - administer multiple servers - manage MySQL users and privileges - check referential integrity - using Query-by-example (QBE), create complex queries
automatically connecting required tables - create PDF graphics of your Database layout - search globally in a database or a subset of it - communicate in 50 different languages
- easily browsing through databases and tables - display binary data f.e. as image - check server settings and runtime information with configuration hints

I suggest to remove the "Description" section from the announcement, just pointing to Documentation.html from phpmyadmin.net.
Can you rework this section in Documentation.html?

I think description should stay there, but maybe it should be taken from current documentation?

Can be done, but more prone to diverge in time if I forget to update in the announcement. I could also put description and link to doc in the announcement, which will make me remember to re-paste :)
