[Phpmyadmin-devel] Theme names and advertising
Hi, I know that we have some (old) themes named WinXP-something, but here is a case I want to discuss about. We got a proposition for 2 themes and their company name is part of the theme name. I don't mind giving proper credits on the themes downloads page, including company name, but using the company name as theme name seems excessive to me. Marc

i don't know ... what names in specific? would you care if add a theme called "Cybot's Orange Den" "Sebastian Mendel's Scalable" or is it just caused by the fact that there is a commerical company behind the theme name? i think having a name behind/in a theme will also help to keep this theme up-to-date - by the name-holder -- Sebastian Mendel www.sebastianmendel.de

But it would create a strange suggestion if the theme is modified by someone else than the name-holder. Calling it "Sebastian Mendel's Scalable" indeed implies some kind of "ownership" of the theme, while the theme is open source and might be heavily modified by other developers afterwards up until a point that it's not even recognisable. I'd keep theme names generic in any case, be it a company name or individual. Thijs

yes, of course, like any open source software, but that's up to the original author - or any following author who can name his theme as he wants, even if based on another theme

i think it is like with any other open source software - the author can name his piece like he wants - or do you think it is not 'allowed' for eZ to name his software eZ..., or what about Zend and his zend-libararies? we also include tcpdf, what do you think means 'tc'? whole PMA is dedicated to 'MySQL' ... and i really see ne sense in 'forcing' authors to specific theme names ... -- Sebastian Mendel www.sebastianmendel.de

You are indeed free to do so if you distribute it yourself, but the question was whether phpmyadmin should discourage such naming when distributing other's themes. Thijs

Freedom goes both ways: the author is free to name is theme how he wants, phpmyadmin is free to decide what they think is desirable about naming conventions, especially if it is phpmyadmin that is doing the "work" of distributing it. Thijs

yes, and i think phpMyAdmin should give the authors the freedom to name they themes as they want. but i still do not know about what names we are talking

how generic? Blue_Orange? a second blue orange themes should be called Blue_Orange_Other_Icons a third blue orange themes should be called Blue_Orange_Other_Icons_and_smaller_text ... i don't think 'generic' is always a good choice for themes ... i do not know other software that have restrictions on theme names ... -- Sebastian Mendel www.sebastianmendel.de

The response from MySQL AB it that they suggest to remove the "mysql" part from the theme name, to avoid any confusion for users about this theme being provided by MySQL AB. Marc

I suggested to the SynergyMX guy to use "dolphin" instead of "mysql", he agreed and came back with "SynergyDolphin" so I guess that we'll have two new themes: Pixeline SynergyDolphin

We could but these themes are unmaintained at the moment, I was thinking to remove them from the list of themes on phpmyadmin.net.
