Strangely, it works like a charm on my win32 apache/php4/mysql box.

in
/usr/local/etc/www/si/php/phpMyAdmin-devel/lib.inc.php3 on line 38
Warning: MySQL: A link to the server could not be established in
/usr/local/etc/www/si/php/phpMyAdmin-devel/lib.inc.php3 on line 38
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_die() in
/usr/local/etc/www/si/php/phpMyAdmin-devel/lib.inc.php3 on line 38
PS: I just modified lib.inc.php3 for another bug, but it includes your changes.

probably you are not using the advanced auth stuff...
