Great - and as I see it - the problem exists only with PHP running in
safe mode with memory limits set. And I'll just think if there's a way
to solve it - but there has to be... I'll run some more tests. 

(and see if I can get a PHP running in safemode to do the 'bug' here -
but actually it isen't a bug but a restriction that we will have to find
a way to get past...)
