Well, at the team meeting, we decided against offering a non-tree view option.
But of course, improvements in the tree view are welcome.
Meanwhile, I gave a try implementing https://sourceforge.net/p/phpmyadmin/feature-requests/1435/(which seems like an improvement to me as it reduces the number of clicks)
