Blogging for GSoC

Hello, As part of GSoC with phpMyAdmin, we ask that you make weekly blog posts, which describe what work you've accomplished and what successes or struggles you've encountered. Previous GSoC students have generally preferred the free hosted WordPress or Medium platforms, but generally we're happy with anything you prefer; although it's much better if the platform provides an Atom/RSS feed so we can post it from our Planet feed. If you could reply to me with the URL of your blog I can add it to Planet. Thanks and happy summer, Isaac

Welcome to GSoC and phpMyAdmin

Hello, Welcome to the Google Summer of Code through phpMyAdmin. We're delighted you have decided to work with us. You've shown considerable effort with your proposals and contributions and we are looking forward to working together through the summer, and hopefully even after the summer. I'm Isaac and the main project administrator. I've been with phpMyAdmin in some capacity since 2005. I'm located in the United States. If you have a concern about your interactions with your mentor, I recommend approaching him, but if you wish you may reach out to me directly. Further, we have another project member, William Desportes <williamdes(a)wdes.fr>, who isn't a mentor of GSoC but is responsive if you have issues. You should probably only engage him if the mentors are unresponsive, but I find it's helpful to lay out these contingency plans before they would be needed. In general, we prefer communication to be public. If you have questions or wish to confirm you ideas about the design or implementation or an aspect, we prefer for that to happen on the developer mailing list or corresponding Github issue, so that the discussion about a particular decision can be found in the future. Private matters or interactions with your mentor can take whatever form your mentor prefers, whether that's by direct email, Google Hangouts, Jabber, IRC, or something else. General discussions intended for the group of mentors can be directed to gsoc-mentors-2019(a)phpmyadmin.net, but I don't expect you to need this very often. Your mentor can help you find the proper branch to target with your work, but generally we're working towards phpMyAdmin 5.1, as I hope to release 5.0-alpha before the coding period begins. You'll submit pull requests much as you did during the application period. If you have any trouble along the way, please let the development team know. We might not have the answers to your immediate problem, but we're here to help work through a solution. Congratulations and best wishes, Isaac

Slot Allocation

Hello everyone, We have been allotted three slots by Google so I assume we would be mentoring the following three projects: 1. Convert UI to Bootstrap (by Mauricio) 2. Refactoring and Improving Designer (by Isaac) 3. General Improvements (by Me) For the General Improvements project, I am not able to decide between two proposals so I have marked both of them as 'Want to Mentor'. Please look at these two proposals. Hi, I’ll finish my work on this today, I’ve had an unexpected distraction over the past 1.5 days so I apologize that I’ve been quiet. You both like Nupur Agarwal for the Bootstrap project, which is fine. I like the amount of effort Agha Saad Fraz has been putting in to the issue tracker, by effort doesn’t directly equate to understanding and I had some concerns about some of his work, so I support your decision. I’ll look at the candidates for Saksham’s project after a morning meeting. Thank you both for working so diligently on this. Deadline double check

Our next deadline (for slot selection) should be May 6, right? Someone just emailed the Google mentor list saying that they shouldn’t make a deadline on Easter Monday, which is in four days… But I don’t see anything on the timeline about that date. I’m just looking to double check my facts.

Final submissions are due soon

Hi mentors, The final submissions are due in less than 24 hours, so we're getting a lot of submissions now with people finalizing their draft proposal, or rushing to submit anything. I'm cutting back with feedback to students, since 1) they waited until the last minute and 2) they likely won't have time to fix any issues anyway. After the deadline, I'll go through and hide the ones that clearly don't belong, and we can begin discussions from there. We've got several strong candidates this year.

GSoC proposal feedback

Hello, I reviewed your GSoC proposal with phpMyAdmin but oddly, it came to me as a PDF rather than a Google document that I could directly comment in. My only suggestion is that I think the timeline could use some more detailed information, for instance if you think a specific aspect will take about a week you could schedule that and then list another aspect of the project with how long that should take. I suggest breaking it down by weeks, such as * May 20-24 rewrite the widgets * May 27-June 7 enhance the foo and extract the code to functions Regards, Isaac
