But, the problem with SQL is, when a new user fires a SQL query, he needs to know 2 things : 1. He needs to all the relations in the schema, and how are they related, and how are they linked using which attributes. 2. When a user needs to fire similar queries (similar means queries with almost same entities), in such a case all the JOIN statements or linking conditions have to be rewritten. So, here I propose a tool, which comprises of a metadata and syntax generator, algorithm and query helper, which can help user create a specialized syntax for querying the database in a simple and efficient manner, ignoring all the linking between the various tables. *What have been done so far with this idea : *I have been developing a Paper Conference Management System for an International Paper Conference which is conducted in our college, and there are various queries and reports which are to be generated, but considering the modularity of the software architecture and the normalized databases, the SQL queries tend to become bigger and bigger and making it difficult for the user who doesn't know the database schema to generate reports. So, I have done a partial implementation of this concept, in that project.The current code can be found at : http://conms.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/conms/conms/compiler.php?revision=5… It is not complete, and may contain errors. *Vision:* To develop a robust system, which makes generation of SQL queries simpler for the end-user, thus, empowering the user to generate database queries/reports without any prior knowledge regarding the database schema. The system can be condensed to form a tool, which automatically generates the metadata, with the database schema provided along with an algorithm to generate queries and a query helper tool. *Advantages:* - Uses Finite State Model, hence, is fast. - If the database schema changes, only the new metadata files have to be changed. - The user need not type the monotonous JOIN statements or linking the attributes. - Supports augmented attributes, for example, “name” can be replaced by “first_name” and “last_name”. - Supports null transitions. - Supports linking of various tables. *Anticipated challenges:* - If the system, goes to a state multiple times, it would have same conditions added multiple times. Solution : This has been taken care of by developing a query builder class, which ignores duplicate conditions and attributes. - Ambiguity between same named attributes of various relations. Solution : In the SQL query, the attributes are replaced by their relations_name.attribute_name. - Using aggregate functions. - Using with tables which are designed as key/value pairs. - Generating queries using “having” or “group by” clause. *Schedule of Deliverables* *Milestones and deliverables schedule:* - *April 25 - May 23 (28 days):* Get acquainted with the development cycle, version control systems. Read various books on Django development. Study the current schema. Discuss with mentors the current design and check for potential pitfalls and try to modify the design the system in order to cover them. Develop a initial standard for the metadata files. - *May 23 - May 13 (14 days):* Design the basic algorithm (including Lexical Analysis and Syntax Checker), which takes the metadata files and the query, to generate the SQL query. This also includes manual creation of metadata files and synthesis of complex queries. - *June 13 - June 27 (14 days): *Develop the query helper tool, which helps user to build query. The tool shows the valid inputs when user is present at a particular stage. - *June 27 - July 11 (14 days):*Correct any discrepancies in the system and prepare test cases and documentation. Generate test reports and make sure the system is running perfectly fine. - *July 15 –August 1 (17 days):*Develop the metadata generator tool, which helps user customize the syntax and also edit the entities interacting in the system. - *August 1 - August 8 (7 days):*The entire system, integrated and checked. Revise the standard of the metadata files. Correct the bugs which occur after the integration of the system. Generate the test cases. Convert the module into various independent libraries. - *August 8 - August 22 (14 days) :*Start preparing the final documentation and perform the rigorous testing on the system. *Other commitments:*None *Open Source Development Experience* 1. Hi, Previously, I have emailed some of my suggestions on User Interface Cleanup project. But after doing some research, I found that compared to User Interface Cleanup project, Browse-mode Improvement project will provide me to achieve the satisfied result and bring me higher chance of success. I have submitted a proposal on this project and also have added some ideas besides feature requests listed on the phpMyAdmin Ideas Page. The following is my suggestions for this project. Any comment and suggestion are welcome. Synopsis: This project is intended to improve the convenience of users when using phpMyAdmin, particularly when browsing tables. This can be achieved by adding the following features to phpMyAdmin: •Browse recently used tables •Remember the last way user sorted tables •Flexible table’s column width •Reorder table’s column using mouse during browsing •Show only selected columns •Integration of navigation bar •Edit only selected field •Grid view in the table edit page Project Details: •Browse recently used tables Interface As discussed in the feature tracker , we can show recent tables that have been viewed by user as a drop-down list in the navigation frame. To keep things simple, the preferences will only show a checkbox “Display recent [#] tables” with the [#] default to 10 and can be set by user. Storage Recently used tables can be stored in phpmyadmin database if it has been configured or in session variable if it is not. •Remember the last way user sorted tables Sorted column of each table can be stored (if the table is ever sorted) in phpmyadmin database or in session variable. When user browse a table, this value is read and added to sorting criteria of the SQL select query. This value must be synchronized with current database, i.e. when user drop a field, table, or database, the corresponding sorting value must be deleted. Mariñas •Flexible table’s column width & reorder table’s column using mouse during browsing We can add functionality to adjust width and reorder table’s column by using jQuery. Again, table’s column order can be saved in phpmyadmin database or in session variable. An option “Remember tables’ columns order” can be added to the preference page. •Show only selected columns Currently, users have to run a SQL SELECT query or create a VIEW to display only certain columns from a table. This is sometimes cumbersome. We can improve this by adding a drop-down list in table’s header, giving checklist options to show only certain columns. This can be done by using jQuery. •Integration of navigation bar Current interface of navigation bar (prev, next) and “Show # row(s) starting …” can be integrated with the query-result table. So it will look like a part of the table and make user more convenient to use the navigation. •Edit only selected field One way to achieve this: modify current edit page to show only selected field. When user runs a select query, select some rows, and then click edit, some variables will be passed to edit page, so it hides fields that are not shown in the query result. Alternatively, an option to show/unhide all fields can be added. •Grid view in the table edit page Sometimes, users want to be able to edit only certain selected rows, but with a browse-like view. (Think of actions: browse -> select some rows -> With selected: edit) I am thinking of improving the edit page, so user can have an option to edit table in a grid view instead of current edit view. The grid view will be simple, 2D grid, like in browse table. Each cell will be resizable text field, where user can change the value directly by typing in it. I think this will be a complement of inline edit, since we can edit TEXT type value (which cannot be edited in inline edit).

Hello, I'm a second year CS and EE at Bristol University, England. I have exams until the 17th of June. I know officially students are meant to start on the 23rd of May, and I would be willing to make a start then, but since I have exams around that period, I wouldn't be able to work on it full time until the 17th. Would this be a problem? Okay, I'm thinking of putting forward 2 proposals, both from the idea's page. But before I do, I need to clarify a few things. *Zoom Search* (and more AJAX) I'm not sure if anyone has ever looked into it, but jqPlot looks like it'd be ideal for this. It already has a zoom feature, offers a bit of "shininess", and would be quite straight forward to implement, I feel. Since pma is already implementing jQuery, using a plugin of it makes sense. jqPlot also offers a simple line of best fit. Would a few more simple mathematical functions (K-means, standard deviation, Cov?) be worth it? While I don't expect anyone to want to do anything serious in a browser, it might be worth it to have a simple way of viewing trends without having to export the database to something like matlab. Even with the extra mathematical functions, I feel like it probably wouldn't take much time to implement - i.e less than 4 weeks - and adding more AJAX seems to be the idea that naturally fits. If this seems like a good idea I'll look more into the AJAXify part. (and probably try 1 or 2 for a contribution) Failing that, dealing with the "Browse-mode improvements", I feel that working full time on that, I could probably get through most of that list in about 4 weeks, especially since jQuery can be used. The main question here is would phpmyadmin save thing's like the last view table or SQL command in a flat file, use the database or have a choice? The jqPlot website has a lot of examples on it ( http://www.jqplot.com/tests/ ) I'm currently working on the concept, though its still a WIP and right now only displays random data. Still, I think it should shows that doing what is required should be quite straightforward. http://mirey.pcriot.com/zoom.php *phpMyAdmin OOP* This seems like a massive job, as it'd be rewritting the whole of PMA. Would there be any opposition to using a framework such as codeigniter? I guess the main question is, would it use none of the old code until it is finished, or would it there be a period where it would be OOP and the old procedural stuff? An argument against CI is that people would have to learn how to use CI. But I'd argue that having an arbitrary way of doing it would be more time consuming to learn, and people are likely to know how to use CI, or something similar anyway. Would it be worth splitting this down into a number of student projects, each focusing on a particular part? I'd ultimately like to do this, though before I think about it further, I'd want to know whether I could use a framework, or if it would need to be from scratch. Thank you, Mike

Hi, I am a great enthusiast of phpMyAdmin and am willing to participate in GSoC in one of the phpMyAdmin projects. I have ample experience in and understand the working of phpMyAdmin very well. But the first requirement for submitting my proposal for any of the projects under phpMyAdmin seems to be submission of a patch. Could somebody help me on how I could submit a patch? Do I find a bug in the bug-tracker and fix it? I am hoping against all odds, to be able to submit a patch before 8th April and be able to submit my proposal. Any help would be highly appreciable.
