Yes, it would be good to have two scripts, let's say "version.php" for 2.x branch and "version3.php" for 3.x.
But how would you guess which user whats to use 3.x branch and which 2.x one? I think it is okay to offer latest version and if someone has to stay with 2.x branch, he has to check manually.
