Seems like people are literally teaming up there and making demand! Meanwhile, I gave a try implementing https://sourceforge.net/p/phpmyadmin/feature-requests/1435/ (which seems like an improvement to me as it reduces the number of clicks)

We should evaluate if there are many users like those, who want to be able to disable the 4.0-style tree-nav. Can we perhaps put up a poll on pma.net to find out? Just wondering.
+1 to the poll if we are to consider providing option for alternate "dropdown feature"...
