Hi all,
today i received this message (below) from Hosteurope.de and forwarding it to the team (especially Marc) to decide how to reply:
Hosteurope (ISP for webspace, virtual server and housing)
is asking for permission to use phpMyAdmin with her own theme without PMA logo - for better integration with their other user interfaces
(they already use phpMyAdmin for their customers, but with default theme)
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Erstellung eines phpMyAdmin-Themes mit eigenem Logo möglich? Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 14:42:40 +0200 From: Thomas von Mengden tvm@hosteurope.de To: cybot_tm@users.sourceforge.net CC: Christoph Selbach cs@hosteurope.de
Sehr geehrter Herr Mendel,

I don't see any problem with that.

I guess that's fine with the GPL as long as changing the theme does not result in removing/hiding copyright information (e.g. the README file).
But another thing that came to my mind when reading this: What about the custom theme itself? I'm not a GPL specialist, but does the GPL force them to make their theme available under the GPL, too? If so, is this something we want? :-)
Regards,
Alexander

Yes that's right, and perhabs a link to GPL license?

Hi Alexander,
reading this:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLRequireSourcePostedPublic
I would answer that since they released their version publicly, it's also covered by the GPL. In some sense, the custom theme is a modification of the original theme, no?
I think that we should inform them of this. However I don't think we should merge their custom theme in our SVN or offer it for download. They would have the responsibility of giving access to the source code.

It definitely is! But keep in mind, that their company logo will be part of the custom theme. I don't think that a company wants to put its logo under the GPL just because of a PMA theme. This is why I asked if we really want them to release their theme under the GPL.

I agree.

I'm not sure that images need to be covered by GPL; after all, GPL is mainly for code. But I've yet to find something official about this. I just read http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/5446.

Hi Sebastian,
no problem for me, as we already have a feature that permits to specify the logo.
