Hi, I am a student pursuing B Tech(Graduation) in Computer Science and Engineering from India and i am in final semester.I am new to this community and posting my views for the very first time. I want to convert this application into Three tier architecture. I have worked on PHPMyAdmin for my personal purpose. I also want to work for User Interface improvement but couldn't get so much idea about it, if somebody can help me understanding it? I have a working experience of one year in PHP and i work as a freelancer also in PHP for an organization. And this time i want to contribute in PHPMyadmin as a part of my open source evangelism. Hi Dieter, I am interested in applying for GSOC , but i am also interested in contributing in general. As phpmyadmin is a tool that we make use daily and , its high time i give something back for the support rendered trough this neat tool trough out the years. But as u mentioned , for the GSOC i could look in to conversion of a particular section or module into oop and later once this rush GSOC is done , we (any one who likes to contribute) can get together and go full scale with the solution for the conversion. If I plan to choose a small part for the GSOC , say Converting the User Management (Authentication) in to OOP will it be with sufficient scope for GSOC ? In that manner , gradually we will be one step closer for the overall goal. Hi, About converting , the Program Structure to MVC. I am currently working on few project with the Zend Framework. And one project which we manually created a framework that implements the pattern. As your suggestion , i think even i could give a hand , since its going to be something massive. We could simple address certain modules of the system. In terms of using the MVC pattern , how do u plan to do this ? Create one from scratch (I think this would be good) or adopt an existing Framework. In either case we can look in to this in more detail. Regards, Gayan

Hi, I've been doing some research for routines, triggers and events. I feel that comparing to the Ajaxify job, this job may give me greater sense of achievement. But, I insist, as the ajaxification of PMA is just started, it's very essential to build a common framework on request processing and do some refactor work. So I still hope that I can take the Ajaxify work,rather than 'Support for Procedure'. So the following is my ideas for 'Support for Procedure', please give me some suggestions. 1 main page for routines,triggers and events. I prefer to create a new tab in table view for routines,triggers and events together, create three (or four) html table for them, in each table their metadatas and some operation icons are displayed. the operation icons include "alter","delete", and for functions and procedures, "call". Besides, User can create new items and perform multi-item operation. INFORMATION_SCHEMA does not have a PARAMETERS Table until MySQL 5.5, so for the older version the parameter of routines cannot be seen in this main page. Then I'll develop seperate mananging module for routines,triggers and events.In ajax mode, it'll display in a popup JQuery UI Dialog and as a new page otherwise. 2 stored procedures and functions User need to fill in: Definer;(select;default:current user, this should set unchangable if user do not have SUPER privilege;else it will be a list box) Routine Type:(select;Procedure or Function) Procedure or Function Name;(text-input) Parameter List;(including:select:[IN | OUT | INOUT],text-input:param_name and select:type. for function, every param is IN;the type options should include the enum type which is defined in the table. for MySQL 5.5- , we need to fetch the parameter list from SHOW CREATE PROCEDURE command) Characteristic: COMMENT;(text-input) LANGUAGE;(According to the MYSQL official doc, actually only SQL is accepted) DETERMINISTIC;(checkbox;default:Yes ) SQL SECURITY;(radio;default:Definer) other characteristics;(radio{CONTAINS SQL | NO SQL | READS SQL DATA | MODIFIES SQL DATA},only advisory to the server) Return type;(the same as type in Parameter List.for function only) Routine_body;(textarea) users can call a procedure or function in the main page. If a Procedure returns by OUT or INOUT params, we'll add a select statement after calling. 3 triggers CREATE Trigger requires SUPER priviledge, so non-SUPER user shouldn't access the this managing page. User need to fill in: Definer;(select;default:current user) Trigger name;(text-input) Trigger time;(select;BEFORE or AFTER) Trigger event;(select;INSERT|UPDATE|DELETE) Trigger body;(textarea) Users don't have to input table name because we already know which table this trigger attached to. 4 events User need to fill in: Definer;(select;default:current user, this should set unchangable if user do not have SUPER privilege;else it will be a combo box) Event_name;(text-input) Schedule: At timestamp(+ interval)(text-input + select) or Every interval Starts(...) Ends(...)(text-input + select); ON COMPLETION [OR NOT] PRESERVE;(selet;defautl no) ENABLE | DISABLE | DISABLE ON SLAVE;(select;default ENABLE) COMMENT;(text-input) Event Body;(textarea) 5 editor for routines,triggers and events There are plenty of restrictions for them, in http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql-reslimits-excerpt/5.5/en/stored-program-rest… so IMO, we can warn the user when he's inputting some illegal statements. And still, I have some questions. Does mysql have some statistics on triggers and events?Can a procedure output some data directly and meanwhile return some value with OUT|INOUT param?

Hi, I have the following suggestions regarding the OpenGIS support in phpMyAdmin. Problem: There is no proper representation of spatial data. The current version shows the bytes occupied by the spatial data value. Suggestion: A visual representation of data will be more apt or at least a representation to show which type of geometry class it is has to be there. Problem: Inserting data of spatial type. Suggestion: A simple interface where user can select the geometry class from the list and enter the data in a convenient form. For example, If a MULTILINESTRING has to be entered, the user has to manually type MULTILINESTRING and then type its constituents. MULTILINESTRING(LINESTRING(....), LINESTRING(...), .....). Since these datatypes are fixed, a simple interface to select the types will be useful. Problem: The user cannot edit the fields of spatial data. Raw data is displayed. Suggestion: A similar interface mentioned above can be used to edit the value of a spatial field. The corresponding visual representation can be displayed if required. Problem: No support for spatial indexes. Suggestion: Provision for specifying spatial indexes on spatial fields can be added. Problem: Search on spatial data tables. Suggestion: Currently the search functionality on spatial tables is not appropriate. The search has to return the matching geometric entries. A visual representation can be additionally displayed to show the matching geometrics that has the given search item. Problem: Specifying values in WKB format. Suggestion: When user wishes to enter the values in WKB format, an interface must be built to generate the bits in appropriate endian form and conversion from WKB to WKT must be provided. Problem: Spatial table on export produces raw data. Suggestion: The spatial data can be exported as svg or png for the given scale or at least in a form that represents data in a proper way. These are some of my suggestions, improvements have to be done everywhere to support spatial data types. What else can I add to the above list? Thank you

Hi, With reference to my previous ideas regarding zoom search, I present here some of the implementation details of the project. Implementation tags: php, jQuery, ajax *Default View:* Every database is first represented as a scatter of points based on its primary key values. 1. This is very intuitive if the primary key is a numeric value. 2. For varchar type primary keys we can always define ranges. For example the values based on initials can be clubbed together and represented as a graph. The following illustration shows it C| B| A|___________________________________ Values with their relative order in the class-> Example: ‘AB’ and ‘AC’ will belong to the same class of A but ‘AC’ will lie to the right of ‘AB’. Zooming into a class will result in more detail scale. Ex A on the y axis will become AA, AB etc. 3. If a primary key is represented as enum (which is very rare) then a pie chart can be formed. *User defined:* The user will be allowed to pick up 2 columns and then view them graphically. The allowed type will be based on the type on the data type of the 2 columns. For example: A varchar and integer col can be represented as a graph with discrete classes (‘A’,’B’ etc) on the x axis and values at the y axis. And can be accordingly mapped. At every zoom level we keep a track of the points displayed. The cool feature of this api will be as the user selects 2 columns to view at any zoom level. The points available at that zoom level get affected and form a scatter (or the graph depending on the selection). *Some intuitive operation* Once the data is graphically represented we can easily associate values with each point and manipulate them (update, delete). Also a nice addition can be a graphical way of inserting data as we can map every single pixel easily using jQuery (even simple javascript also) we can register a click (when user is in the insert mode) and appropriately map the 2 columns displayed and provide a nice ajax pop up that will allow user to add information about other fields in the table. These are the feature I find appropriate for a 13*40hr project. One of the hot trends on the mailing list was how to implement zooming feature. *ZOOOoooooOM* At this juncture I can think of a simple algorithm based on jQuery. The ui will listen to the mouse wheel. At every discrete step it will create a rectangle with center at the mouse pointer location. Every time we zoom in the rectangle will be reduced in its size. Since we will map every pixel in the ui we can easily find out the points that lie inside the region and hence appropriately show them. One advantage of this is we can use simple limits for points and check what all qualifies. Also this will also allow us to provide an abstract view of level of zoom in the database also. For example: A small section in the ui can show the database and a rectangle showing where we are right now. Let me know your suggestions. -- Dushyant Tiwari BITS Pilani KK Birla Goa Campus

Hi, Now that the official GSoC site is accepting student proposals, students should send their proposals to http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2011/phpmyadmin for them to be officially examined. In the past, a proposal could be edited by the student after submission and I believe it's still the case. Mentors will interact with students in private to ask clarifications about their proposals. Hello, My name is Mateusz Lewandowski, I'm studying computer science and I'm on the forth term of my studies. I have very strong background in OOP, especially in C++ and Java, but I also have some experience in php(I finish one individual project which is written using Symfony framework an now is available on http://www.biuro-lewandowscy.pl/ ). I'm very interested in phpMyAdmin OOP project and I'll get familiar with code of phpMyAdmin as soon as possible in this week.
