Hello,
For those of you who are involved with the wiki, there are a few large changes we're discussing. Michal proposed that this might be the best vehicle for discussion, which seems to make good sense to me.
First: Marc basically suggested creating subcategories for "Google Summer of Code"; that would be the parent category with subcategories like "Google Summer of Code 2011". Then pages like "GSoC 2011 Ideas List" would be in "Category: Google Summer of Code 2011" which would then in turn be "Category: Google Summer of Code". "GSoC 2011 Ideas List" would not appear directly in "Google Summer of Code".
Any objections?
Second: It's been proposed to completely abandon namespaces (such as Devel:) -- in some cases they can help, such as when a page clearly belongs only to one namespace or the other, but many of our pages (for instance, the GSoC pages) either live in the wrong namespace or could be assigned to both.
I do agree that everything currently in Devel: belongs there, but some things in the (Main) namespace probably belong in Devel: and it might be easier to administrate only one namespace...Then we wouldn't have to think about (or discuss) which namespace a page belongs to or move it if content changes.
What do you think?

No, it seems like a good idea. Does this apply to other categories as well (f.e. Devel(opment), ...)? (see second point)

Yes. For example, AJAX and Git could be subcategories of Development and Configuration could a subcategory of "Usage tips" or whatever.

I think that categories and subcategories are a more flexible mechanism than namespaces.

I never got an idea of namespaces, so I have nothing against not using this feature :-).

The left side of the wiki's home page contains news that are not up to date. I suggest remplacing these by a link to http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/news.php
and use the space to put links to some "hot" categories, for example GSoC 2011 and Development.

Somebody used to update it, but indeed it is no more updated now.
and use the space to put links to some "hot" categories, for example GSoC 2011 and Development.
It would be definitely worth a try.

I like the changes you've made to the main page.
How do you all feel about continuing the practice of posting changelogs and feature sets for each release (for instance, http://wiki.phpmyadmin.net/pma/phpMyAdmin_3.3 and http://wiki.phpmyadmin.net/pma/phpMyAdmin_3.2 (both of which are the ultimate destination for minor versions such as [[phpMyAdmin 3.3.4]] and [[phpMyAdmin 3.2.5-rc1]])?

Well, first these pages should be in the Releases category; also I'm not sure why there is a History category as well.
I value the description of feature sets more than the changelogs (or fixes). But I won't have time to maintain these kind of pages.
The page News could be renamed "List of releases" or it could be abandoned by just using the Releases category (not a problem for me to loose the dates that are on this list).

This is fine by me. As Michal said, someone used to update it often, but you can make the change you've suggested. Better to remove the section than have stale information.
I wonder if it could be scripted somehow to create a page with the latest version...I'm aware of the wikipedia-fs utility, but have to look at whether I can automate it properly.
I vote that you go ahead and make the changes you've suggested.
