[Phpmyadmin-devel] GSoC 2011 Proposal: OpenGIS support

Hi, my name is Miłosz Lewandowski and I am studying Theoretical Computer Science at Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland. I would like to participate in GSoC 2011 and I think that I have interesting proposal regarding OpenGIS support. But first, before I will send the proposal, I have some question. 1. In MySQL there is something like spatial indexes, I suppose it would be good if I implemented them also? 2. I suppose that simple graphical editor for spatial datatypes will be good idea. But I don't think that connecting pma only with some maps web application like Google Maps will be appropiate as many users use spatial datatypes in theoretical aspects or even not to geographical purposes, but only geometrical. I suppose that the best way will be graphical editor divided into two parts: geometrical and geographical (of course not named like that). Will it be accepted? 3. What about GEOMETRY_COLUMNS metadata view? I quite can't see where I can put it in PMA in such way that it won't disturb users that don't use spatial features at all. Perhaps the best solution will be to ommit this feature, am I right? And one more question not connected with proposal: there is some lack of bugs on bugtracker, connected with work that is required for my proposal (php). I see mostly gui bugs and closed bugs ;] What are the chances of being accepted without any patch submitted? Best wishes, Miłosz

[Phpmyadmin-devel] GSOC 2011: PAM MOBILE VERSION just another project idea

hi, I have been using PAM for many years now and have seen it evolve many folds in past few years. I would however like to see a mobile version of PAM in near future, either a web UI optimized of web browsers in cellphones or an app (e.g. an Android app). This will enable managing MYSQL database even more easy. Perhaps someone can take up this task and create an Android app. I think, the entire task may be a bit too long for the GSOC 2011 project but it can be taken up in parts, like initially a basic but required use-cases, and later on this can be extended for various other use cases. -- Rohit Kalhans blogfolio: http://info-rohit.co.cc

Hi all, I have a quick question about the "Support for procedures" project for Gsoc. Since the events and triggers are available on a per table basis, I though that it would make sense to also have an overview of all the triggers and events that are available for a particular database. And then use links from the items from this overview to the listings of the triggers and events for the relevant table. If it's a good idea, then I wonder where would the best place to access these lists. I think that it might make little sense to add more tabs to the menu that is displayed in a database page, as it is already quite crowded there. So how about a link to this feature from within a table-wise list of events/triggers? I guess that the workflow may be odd then: database -> table -> table events -> database events -> table events -> chosen item. What do you think? Thanks for any feedback. Rouslan

Hi, all I would like to apply for gsoc 2011 and work on phpmyadmin ui and its usability. My friend Pavel Konnikov made a proposal for it in previous year and i want to continue his work so make phpmyadmin usage more convinient and easy. Phpmyadmin is a powerful tool for database administration but its ui can be more native and clear to ease access for all provided functions. I have some ideas to remake or update phpmyadmin look. Hi cross posting this mail to both -devel and -translators. Currently we ship all translations with phpMyAdmin. I don't think it really makes sense for languages where just few words are translated. Now the question is where to set the threshold. I think the translation should provide reasonable set of translated messages to be actually useful. One important feature of such a data visualization system is that it should not create confusion or represent something that the data is not. Consider the movie database example, when a user sees a plot of ratings vs year / genre vs lanuage, a lot of data points will overlap. So a lot of data will be hidden from the user at the first sight. What will a user make out of it? I know we handle such conditions by providing all the data instances when he clicks on the point but a user might not go that far. If he is not able to understand the initial plot he might not continue further ( like not zoom in/click data point).
