Hey all,
I discovered GSoC within the last few days and saw that phpMyAdmin was a
mentoring organization.
I've been coding in PHP and using phpMyAdmin to manage my database backends
for the last couple of years. So I would really love to help contribute to
this excellent open source project.
But given that I have only just discovered GSoC, and one of your
application requirements is to have already contributed to phpMyAdmin, am I
too late to make a contribution and apply?
If not, what can I do to contribute? Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Hi Rouslan,
Thanks for replying. I was unable to reply properly using my
SourceForge account. I have worked with a few mailing lists like
Google Groups, but this one seemed different to me. I didn't even get
emails when you people replied on this thread because I had my Digest
Mode On, thus I didn't have an option to Reply to All.
I will be formatting manually for this time only, as I have no email
to reply to. (Didn't wanna spoil the reply format)

Yes, you can try it online at http://faceinbook.co.nr/flowork/home.html.

Yeah, I got it a bit wrong on the first go. But on reading the idea
again I understood what exactly it is about.

I thought a client-side component for handling errors as well as one
for diagnosing issues was suggested. But actually the suggestion was
for a client-side component for sending errors to a server-side
component with the data containing nothing that concerns the user
about his/her privacy. Thus there is no need of encryption as you
said, because the data contains no sensitive information.
And also as you wrote that there is no means to check if a request is
valid, and hence no need for checking for authentication.
I would be happy to implement what you suggested about restricting the
number of requests per IP to prevent the defacing of the
server-system. Also I will be more than pleased to work on the
server-side part to allow the phpMyAdmin developers to analyze and
diagnose the errors.
Also to prevent the back-end from attacks such as DoS you suggested a
global limit on the number of requests. It seems easy to implement but
will play an important role against DoS attacks.
I will reply back after I work out a plan for the server-side
interface and functioning for comments from you all.

Yes, is there a place where I can upload a draft of my application for
my mentor to review it? If not, is posting it to the mailing list
fine?
Hi all,
I'd like to apply for a project of PMA for the GSOC. I'm interested on
project ideas,
1. Interface Improvements
2. Re-factoring SQL Executor
For getting familiar with PMA dev I have implemented the "Find and
Replacing column wise" feature as I feel the feature is very useful.
http://sourceforge.net/p/phpmyadmin/feature-requests/487/
I have sent a pull request for the implemented feature
https://github.com/phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/pull/273
Your comments are welcome....
I wish all the GSOC applicants best of luck...!
Thank you.

Hi all,
I created a fix for the feature-requests-1327[1] and
sent a pull request at [2].
Please review and verify the provided fix.
When working on feature-request I noticed that, Edit user' links in the
"Users overview" page should also be removed for unprivileged users.
Shall I report this as a separate feature-request or should this be added
to this request at [1]?

Howdy subscribers !
I would like to participate google summer of code and I am looking for
something interesting to fit in.
I think about phpMyAdmin feature. However the idea is not listed, so I
would like to discuss it here.
I would like to know is the idea below reasonable or is it rather
material for new independent project.
In few words: self-generating admin panel for casual user.
Well, phpMyAdmin is dedicated for super-users. It's obvious and I hope
it 'll never change. But imagine a mode of phpMyAdmin that is dedicated
to end-users that are just websites owners but no coders.
What I mean ? Let's say I am a website programmer. I am creating simple
website php + MySQL etc. I am writing code for client that is not
familiar with any code.
My goals are:
1. create DB structure
2. create website
3. create admin panel
1 & 2 are interesting while 3 is not. But wait a minute. Why should I
create admin panel ? Maybe phpMyAdmin is enough ? Indeed. But it's too
complicated for simple human being. It's also static. It bases just on
databes.
I think phpMyAdmin + some heuristic knowledge about DB = pretty and
usefull panel for site-admins that are just managing contents
Gate to this simplified feature may be just phpMyAdmin user/password.
Let's say after sign in programmer will see phpMyAdmin as-it-is today,
while site admin (not programmer) will see clear and simple admin-panel.
How about ?

Hi all,
As indicated in the tracker I am working on fixing the bug #3879 [1] and
have submitted a pull request [2]
I noticed that in the latest version the interface does not allow changing
format specific options such as 'Columns separated with', 'Columns enclosed
with' etc in the import tab. However in the earlier versions these values
could be specified using the interface.
Is this change intentional or is it a regression?
